Exploratory
Project Imagination
How does the mind construct and reason about possibilities that are not presently given?
Human beings construct worlds that are not presently given and reason about what could happen within them. Project Imagination explores how deliberate possible-world construction might be characterized and evaluated, and what an artificial reproduction would need to preserve.
Working scope
Deliberate possible-world construction: generating, manipulating, exploring, and evaluating hypothetical scenarios, futures, counterfactuals, objects, systems, environments, or states.
The boundary between imagination, prediction, simulation, planning, creativity, and Fiction remains unresolved. Hypothetical prose alone does not establish the capability.
A possibility that holds together
Illustrative scenario · Not an executed experiment or adopted protocol
Imagine a small settlement connected by two bridges. One bridge can carry heavy supplies; the other can carry only people. Now suppose the first bridge closes. A system would need to preserve the remaining constraints, change its account of what is reachable, and evaluate which possibilities survive the change.
This illustrative scenario makes several questions visible: constructing the hypothetical setting, maintaining its constraints, manipulating a condition, and evaluating consequences. Prediction asks what may happen; planning asks how to achieve an objective; simulation may provide a way to explore transitions. Imagination could participate in each. Their boundaries are research questions rather than settled divisions.
