Current working formulation
How should spontaneous internally generated cognition without immediate external task demand be characterized, what makes it productive, and can that productive off-task cognition be meaningfully instantiated and evaluated in AI models?
This is a concept-formation question. It leaves open whether a defensible computational analogue can be specified and measured.
Priority open questions
- What do "spontaneous", "internally generated", and "without immediate external task demand" mean, and what external conditions remain compatible with the target?
- How does the proposed phenomenon differ from deliberate imagination, mind-wandering, spontaneous thought, generative search, and stochastic model behavior?
- What observable evidence would distinguish a relevant cognitive process from output diversity or randomness alone?
- What information, state, task, or temporal boundaries would an operationalization need to specify?
- What would justify a claim of a computational analogue, and what would make the framing too ambiguous or unmeasurable to pursue as currently stated?
- When are associative drift, mind-wandering, incubation, or cross-domain connections productive, and what evidence distinguishes useful idea emergence from off-task activity alone?
Resolution status
No precise definition, measurement scheme, mechanism, or architecture is adopted. The relationship to Project Imagination and Project Fiction remains an open issue, not a basis for merging the programs. Record any adopted boundary in research status, methodology, and the research log.
